Holmes said, “Do you know what these notes refer to?”

“I wish I did. Bern was a dear man but also very secretive. He was especially reticent about business matters, which he did not like to discuss with me. I believe he thought that as a woman, I could never understand such things. Still, a wife always knows more about her husband than he knows about her, and I was aware something had come to trouble him deeply, and that it concerned the affairs of the cooperative.”

“I presume you mean possible changes to the cooperative structure,” Holmes said, thinking back to his recent conversation with Halbach.

“Yes.”

“But your husband never revealed exactly why he was so troubled?”

“No, but I think he had talked about his concerns with Mr. Halbach and probably with the Eisens, too.”

Holmes looked again at Bernhard Krupp’s mysterious notes. “May I keep this document for the time being?”

“Certainly. You must believe it is important.”

“I do,” said Holmes, “and I will be very interested to see what Mr. Schmidt has to say about it. Now, may I ask if there is anyone in town you suspect of murdering your husband? A person, for example, who might stand to gain by his death?”

“That is the trouble. I don’t really know. But I hardly think it a coincidence Bern was killed just two days after visiting Mr. Schmidt to talk about the cooperative. What do you think, Mr. Holmes?”

“I think coincidences do indeed occur,” Holmes said, gazing into Katherine Krupp’s eyes, “but not very often.”

Later, after Holmes had asked all the questions he thought it necessary to ask, he lingered for a time in Mrs. Krupp’s living room. She brought out a decanter of peppermint schnapps, and Holmes found both the liqueur and the company most pleasing.

“You will forgive me for saying so,” he said, “but I wonder why you stay here, Mrs. Krupp. Surely, Eisendorf must be terribly lonely for a widow such as yourself.”

“It is,” she said, “but Bern and I had many friends in Rochester, and I still see them quite often. Still, you are right to wonder why I stay. I often wonder myself. Maybe staying put is what we must do as we get old and the world seems to grow ever stranger to us.”

“But you are still a young woman,” Holmes protested.

“I will be fifty-nine next month, and that is not young. I know, a woman is never supposed to reveal her age, but why lie about who and what you are? Besides, I don’t mind being the age I am. I have learned there is such a thing as wisdom, and it offers certain deep pleasures youth cannot match. What of you, Mr. Holmes? I thought I read somewhere that you are retired. Or should I say, were retired?”

“Yes, I did retire. The world began to wear on me, and I decided some years ago to spend my days more quietly.”

“But didn’t you miss being a detective? What an amazing life it must have been!”

“I did not give it up entirely, Mrs.
